Polio-like illness affecting children in California

CALIFUSA Today (2/24, Weise) reports a polio-like condition has affected 25 children in the state of California, paralyzing many of their limbs. After emerging in 2012, the state has begun cooperation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, although no cases have yet been reported outside the state. According to California Department of Public Health Chief of the Encephalitis and Special Investigation Section Carol Glaser, “The California Department of Public Health has asked health care providers to report any polio-like cases they might identify and send specimens so that we can better assess the situation.”

The AP (2/24) reports California Department of Public Health officials are concerned about the recent illness because the US eradicated polio and some patients had not yet been overseas.

Report: IVF use at record high

ivfABC World News (2/17, story 5, 0:25, Sawyer) reported, “Thirty five years after the first test-tube baby, in vitro fertilization” has “skyrocketed.”

The Los Angeles Times (2/16, Kaplan) “Science Now” blog reported, “More than 1.5% of babies born in the U.S. in 2012 were conceived in a laboratory dish thanks to in vitro fertilization – an all-time high, according to a report released Monday by the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology.” The blog added that “the 379 fertility clinics that are members of SART performed a total of 165,172 procedures in 2012,” which led to “the births of 61,740 babies. Both figures are new records as well, SART says.”

US heroin use has doubled over the last five years

philip seymour hoffmanTwo network television news segments, major US newspapers and wire sources report that heroin use in the US has skyrocketed. NBC Nightly News (2/3, story 3, 2:30, Williams) reported, “The death of…star Philip Seymour Hoffman at 46 is bringing attention to a heroin problem that is exploding among people in all walks of life across our country.” NBC News correspondent Kate Snow explained, “Heroin use in the US nearly doubled over the last five years. More than a quarter million people a year end up in the” emergency department.

The CBS Evening News (2/3, story 2, 2:00, Pelley) reported, “The northeast and some other parts of the country are seeing an increase right now in deaths from heroin laced with additives.”

The Wall Street Journal (2/4, A5, Campo-Flores, Elinson, Subscription Publication) points out that according to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the number of people in the US using heroin increased nearly 80% between the years 2007 and 2012. Meanwhile, overdose deaths caused by heroin increased 55% between the years 2000 and 2010, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Testosterone supplements linked to increased heart attack risk in men

The CBS Evening News (1/29, story 9, 1:45, Pelley) reported that new research suggests “a link between testosterone supplements and heart attacks.”

USA Today (1/30, Szabo) reports that the study, published in PLOS One, found that “taking testosterone therapy doubled the risk of heart attack among men over age 65 and nearly tripled the risk in younger men with a history of heart disease.” This research, “which involved 56,000 men, is the latest in a series of studies raising concerns about the heart attack risk from testosterone therapy, whose popularity has ballooned in recent years.”

On its website, NBC News (1/30, Fox) reports that “to be sure,” the researchers “compared the men getting testosterone to those getting prescriptions for erectile dysfunction drugs, as the two groups are similar in many ways.” The investigators found that the ED medications “only very slightly raised the risk of heart attack.”
